Get Your Baby to Sleep

Getting your baby to sleep can be a challenging endeavor for any mom.  We often wonder if we are the cause of the problem.  Even though research has shown that it's perfectly normal for some infants and toddlers to have irregular sleeping cycles.

However, there are some strategies that we can apply to help our children sleep better.

  • Be consistent with having a bedtime routine is great for your baby.  If your bedtime routine consists of bedtime stories, music and a bath prior to bed, make sure that these routines are consistent on a daily basis.
  • Reassure your child that you are there without returning to the bedroom every time your child complains.
  • Make sure your child is comfortable
  • Do not sleep in the same bed
  • Routines and schedules are important
  • It takes time to see changes
  • Every child is different.  Do not compare your child with others

Things that can help your child to sleep

  • Rocking your baby
  • Singing a lullaby
  • Playing tranquil or relaxing music
  • Feeding your baby until he/she becomes drowsy
  • Remove any stimulation or noise background
  • Massages are really helpful

Lastly, it is important to remember that we should not use heavier blankets, pillows or crib bumpers.  Make sure your baby sleeps flat on the back.  Removing background stimulation is the key to sleep better. A daily schedule, naps and bedtimes are important.  Following a consistent schedule, calming techniques, and having a specific time frame will help your child to sleep better.

 Always consult with your pediatrician.
